The trimesters of pregnancy divide the roughly 40 weeks into three stages, and each stage brings different changes, checks and questions. Knowing what is typical in each one makes it easier to plan appointments and to spot the signs that need a doctor.

This guide walks through all three trimesters of pregnancy in plain language. Timing can vary between doctors, so treat the week ranges as a guide and follow your own doctor's plan.

The Trimesters of Pregnancy at a Glance

Direct answer

The trimesters of pregnancy are the first (about weeks 1 to 12), the second (about weeks 13 to 27) and the third (about weeks 28 to 40). Weeks are counted from the first day of your last period, and each trimester has its own typical symptoms, scans and blood tests.

StageWeeksTypical focus
First trimesterAbout weeks 1 to 12Confirming the pregnancy, dating scan, blood group and basic blood tests, early screening
Second trimesterAbout weeks 13 to 27Detailed anatomy scan, blood sugar screening, blood count review
Third trimesterAbout weeks 28 to 40More frequent visits, growth and blood pressure checks, birth planning

First Trimester: Weeks 1 to 12

The first stage of the trimesters of pregnancy is when the body adjusts to rapid hormone changes. Many women feel very tired and notice nausea, breast tenderness or needing to pass urine more often. Some feel little at all, and that is also normal.

01
Confirm the pregnancy
A urine test at home, or a blood hCG test if your doctor wants a more precise early result.
02
Dating scan
An early ultrasound confirms the pregnancy location and heartbeat, and helps estimate your due date.
03
Booking blood tests
Doctors commonly check blood group and Rh factor, blood count and infection screening at the first visit.
04
Early screening
NIPT, a blood test that screens for certain chromosomal conditions, can be done from around 10 weeks, and some doctors also offer a scan at about 11 to 13 weeks.

Whichever of the trimesters of pregnancy you are in, ask your doctor about folic acid and about any medicines or supplements you take, since some are not recommended in pregnancy.

Second Trimester: Weeks 13 to 27

Many women feel better in this part of the trimesters of pregnancy. Nausea often eases, energy improves, and the bump starts to show. Most people begin to feel the baby move somewhere in this stage.

01

Anatomy scan

A detailed ultrasound, usually around weeks 18 to 22, checks the baby's growth and development.

02

Blood sugar screening

Screening for gestational diabetes is commonly done at around weeks 24 to 28.

03

Blood count review

Your doctor may repeat a blood count to check for anaemia, which is common in pregnancy.

04

Feeling movement

Tell your doctor if you are unsure about movements or notice a change once they are established.

Third Trimester: Weeks 28 to 40

The last stage of the trimesters of pregnancy is about monitoring and preparing. Visits become more frequent, and your doctor pays close attention to blood pressure, the baby's growth and position, and your overall wellbeing.

Regular blood pressure and urine checks to look for pre-eclampsia
Growth scans if your doctor advises them
Tests such as a swab for group B strep, depending on your doctor's practice
Counting and noticing your baby's movements each day
Planning the hospital bag, transport and who will be with you

Swelling, backache, heartburn and poor sleep are common now. They are usually harmless, but sudden or severe changes should always be checked.

Habits That Help in Every Trimester

Trimesters of Pregnancy: Common Questions

The first trimester is about weeks 1 to 12, the second about weeks 13 to 27, and the third about weeks 28 to 40. Different sources round the boundaries slightly.
All three trimesters of pregnancy matter. Early pregnancy is when the baby's organs form, the middle is when detailed scans and screening happen, and the final stage focuses on growth, blood pressure and preparing for birth.
NIPT is a blood test that can usually be done from around 10 weeks of pregnancy. Your doctor will advise whether it suits you.
Commonly this includes blood group and Rh factor, blood count, infection screening and, later, a blood sugar screen. The exact list depends on your doctor.
Blood samples for many routine tests can be collected at home. Scans need a clinic or imaging centre, and any urgent symptom should be assessed in person without delay.
