HbA1c Levels Explained: What Your Result Means for Your Blood Sugar
Understand your HbA1c levels, what the normal range is, and what to do next, in plain language.
HbA1c levels show your average blood sugar over roughly the last 2 to 3 months, which makes this one of the most useful numbers in diabetes care and screening. A single reading can look reassuring or alarming, so it helps to know what the number actually means before you decide what to do next.
This guide explains the standard ranges, how to convert your result into an everyday glucose figure, when the test can mislead, and when to speak to a doctor.

HbA1c Levels: Normal, Prediabetes and Diabetes Ranges
A normal HbA1c is below 5.7%. HbA1c levels of 5.7% to 6.4% fall in the prediabetes range, and 6.5% or higher points to diabetes. A doctor usually confirms a first high result with a repeat test before making a diagnosis.
| Category | HbA1c (%) | HbA1c (mmol/mol) |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 5.7 | Below 39 |
| Prediabetes | 5.7 to 6.4 | 39 to 46 |
| Diabetes | 6.5 and above | 48 and above |
Labs in the UAE may report HbA1c levels in percent, in mmol/mol, or both. The two units describe the same thing, so check which one your report uses before comparing it with any range.
What Does HbA1c Actually Measure
Glucose in your blood attaches to haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The more glucose in your blood over time, the more haemoglobin becomes coated. The test reports the percentage of haemoglobin that is coated.
Red blood cells live for about 3 months, so the result reflects a long average, not a single moment. That is why one big meal or one stressful day will not change it much, and why it is less useful for spotting a sudden change.
Converting Your Result to Average Glucose
Doctors often translate HbA1c levels into an estimated average glucose (eAG), which is closer to the numbers you see on a glucose meter. The figures below are approximate and come from the standard conversion formula.
| HbA1c (%) | Average glucose (mg/dL) | Average glucose (mmol/L) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | about 126 | about 7.0 |
| 7 | about 154 | about 8.6 |
| 8 | about 183 | about 10.2 |
| 9 | about 212 | about 11.8 |
| 10 | about 240 | about 13.3 |
Treat these conversions of HbA1c levels as a guide only. Your own glucose readings may swing above and below the average, and two people with the same HbA1c can have quite different daily patterns.

Targets and How Often to Retest
For many adults living with diabetes, a common target is an HbA1c below 7% (53 mmol/mol). That figure is a starting point, not a rule. Your doctor may set a tighter or looser goal depending on your age, other conditions, medications and risk of low blood sugar.
When HbA1c Levels Can Mislead
Because the test depends on red blood cells, anything that changes those cells can push the number up or down. If your result does not match how you feel or your glucose meter readings, mention these to your doctor.
In these situations a doctor may use a fasting glucose test, a glucose tolerance test or another marker alongside HbA1c levels. A normal HbA1c does not completely rule out a blood sugar problem if symptoms persist.
Do You Need to Prepare for the Test
An HbA1c test does not require fasting, and it can be taken at any time of day. If it is bundled with a fasting glucose or a lipid profile, confirm with the team whether you need to fast for those parts.
Bringing a High Result Down
HbA1c levels respond to steady changes over weeks and months, not quick fixes. The habits with the strongest evidence are the ordinary ones.
Move more
Regular walking or activity helps your body use glucose more effectively.
Improve food quality
Favour fibre, vegetables and whole grains, and cut back on sugary drinks and refined snacks.
Work on weight
Even modest weight loss can improve blood sugar control for many people.
Protect sleep and manage stress
Poor sleep and ongoing stress can make glucose harder to control.

This guide is for general information and does not replace medical advice. Never start, stop or change diabetes medication without speaking to your doctor, and have any result in the diabetes range reviewed by a clinician.
When to Seek Urgent Care
- Extreme thirst, frequent urination, nausea or vomiting, fast breathing or fruity-smelling breath, which can signal diabetic ketoacidosis
- Confusion, severe drowsiness or fainting
- Shakiness, sweating, rapid heartbeat or sudden confusion in someone taking diabetes medication, which can signal low blood sugar
- Abdominal pain with persistent vomiting in a person with high blood sugar
